International Symphony Orchestra

Soars Artistically Thanks to $25,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant

The International Symphony Orchestra will be able to continue its artistic advancement this year thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Facing financial challenges as a result of declining corporate support and decreased bingo revenues, the organization was concerned that the artistic integrity of the 47-year-old cultural group could be negatively affected.

“Our artistic costs represent our heaviest expenditure each season”, notes Anne Brown, the International Symphony Orchestra’s Executive Director.  “We have been slowly and steadily building the orchestra’s artistic level by expanding our professional musician base.  Jerome Summers (the International Symphony Orchestra’s conductor and music director) has worked artistic miracles with this orchestra – skillfully merging a large community musician element with an ever-growing professional component.  The results of his efforts are clearly evident.  The orchestra has never sounded better”.

There was concern that funding shortfalls would result in a reduction of services for the musicians, and a step back artistically, for the organization.  Brown states that, “To eliminate services of our contract and per service musicians would have a damaging effect on artistic quality, jeopardize audience growth and negatively impact the local economy – in short, halt the progress so many individuals have worked hard to accomplish.  We are grateful that the Ontario Trillium Foundation recognizes the significant role that the Arts and Culture segment plays in the overall well-being of a community – culturally, socially, spiritually and economically”.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, annually receives $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario’s charity casino initiative.  The Foundation allocates grants to eligible charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services, and sports and recreation sectors.
